Is Wednesday’s match Celtic’s biggest under Ange?
After a laborious slog against Dundee United combined with Ross County’s enthralling 3-3 draw with Rangers, Celtic now have a chance to go top of the league on Wednesday evening.
Saturday started in great fashion, at least from a Celtic point of view. A topsy, turvy tie in the Highlands resulted in Rangers dropping points for the second time in three league games. Teenager Matthew Wright latched on to a loose ball in the box to fire home and equalise in the sixth minute of stoppage time after the visitors took, lost, then regained the lead.
This result meant there was a real buzz around Parkhead for Celtic’s 3 o’clock fixture with Dundee United.
From the side who defeated Hearts 2-1 in midweek, there was just two changes. Anthony Ralston and Liam Scales came in for Josip Juranovic and Greg Taylor at right and left back respectively.
However, with Celtic struggling at half time, Ange Postecoglou made a double change with Juranovic and Jota replacing Scales and James Forrest.
As time went on and Celtic strived to find a breakthrough, Postecoglou continued to tinker with his side and eventually on the ninetieth minute, whilst being down to ten men, Jota’s cross was deftly taken down by Liel Abada who fired into the roof of the net. Queue sheer pandemonium inside Celtic Park.
Due to Abada’s strike, Celtic cut the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to just two single, solitary points.
Today’s results make Wednesday night’s derby even bigger for Celtic. They have the chance to go top of the league for the first time under Ange Postecoglou and in over a year.
Already under the Australian, the Hoops have played in some crucial European ties, a cup semi final and final and despite Postecoglou’s post-match comments on Saturday saying “You don’t get trophies for being first in February”, it is fair to say Wednesday’s match could be the most significant Celtic have had under the fifty six year old. I certainly believe so.
