Celtic Player Ratings v Ferencvaros
Watching Celtic on a Tuesday afternoon was an anomalous experience for many. The players didn’t let the unusual kick off time get to them though and went about their job professionally, securing a 2-0 victory which could’ve been much more. Let’s get into the player ratings.
Joe Hart - 7/10
The Englishman was ready when called into action and made some big saves. Hart remains a reliable figure between the sticks for Celtic.
Anthony Ralston - 7/10
As always, Ralston gave his all and had an acceptable performance. The Scot was harshly booked for an off the ball altercation in the first half however was disciplined in his playing duties.
Cameron Carter-Vickers - 7/10
Cameron Carter-Vickers had another trustworthy performance at the heart of the Celtic defence. The American played his part in Celtic’s second clean sheet in a row and remained solid throughout the match.
Carl Starfelt - 8/10
For the second match in a row, Carl Starfelt looked like the superior performer of Celtic’s two central defenders. The Swede carried on from his sure display at Fir Park on Saturday with another stable performance this afternoon. It will be intriguing to see which of Celtic’s centre backs, if any, will drop out when Christopher Jullien returns from injury.
Adam Montgomery - 6/10
Despite winning a penalty, I felt Adam Montgomery looked slightly disarranged at times today. In fairness, the teenager has been thrown in at the deep end on several occasions, including this afternoon. In a likelihood, the Scot wouldn’t have started today should Boli Bolingoli have been included in Celtic’s Europa League squad.
Callum McGregor - 7/10
I mentioned on Saturday how Callum McGregor is the man who makes Celtic’s midfield tick. The Celtic captain certainly did so today. The twenty-eight year old did see his penalty saved by Ferencvaros keeper Denes Dibusz in the second half yet was almost immaculate throughout the rest of the match.
David Turnbull - 8/10
David Turnbull had a plethora of chances for Celtic yet managed to just score once. The midfielder’s goal today was one that contrasted his pile driver against Motherwell on Saturday but importantly secured three crucial points.
Tom Rogic - 6/10
Off the back of a first-class display at the weekend, Tom Rogic came into this one high on confidence. The Australian though, was unable to match the heights of Saturday’s match and has a relatively quiet seventy one minutes.
Liel Abada - 6/10
As well as Tom Rogic, Liel Abada had a reserved performance. The Israeli was sparsely involved in the match, practically a mirror image of his showing on Saturday.
Kyogo Furuhashi - 8/10
As ever, Celtic’s Japanese striker was full of life and vitality. Kyogo scored his fourth Europa League goal of the season, cooly slotting past the goalkeeper after sublimely controlling Jota’s pass to put Celtic a goal in front just before the hour. The twenty six year old is arguably one of Celtic’s greatest finds of the past decade.
Jota - 9/10
Jota was consistent once again with his performance. The Portuguese set up Kyogo for Celtic’s opener with a blissful pass. He also assisted David Turnbull for Celtic’s second, the former getting the ball over the line at the second attempt. In addition, Jota was awarded the man of the match award for his exploits which is hard to disagree with.
Substitutes
Four of the five available substitutes to Ange Postecoglou were made by the Australian this afternoon. Nir Bitton replaced Tom Rogic in midfield and was astute, Liam Scales played the final fifteen minutes and Mikey Johnston was lively however I was most impressed by Giorgos Giakoumakis. The Greek striker provided a different dynamic to Celtic’s attack and held the ball up well when required. Giakoumakis was unfortunate not to find the back of the net with a header minutes after coming on.
Celtic finally have some points on the board in the Europa League. Goals from Kyogo and David Turnbull secured what could turn out to be a vital victory come the end of the group stage.
